Comprehensive
Clinical Services
WPIC is dedicated
to providing high-quality health care that is compassionate, attractive
to patients and their support systems, and responsive to referring
professionals and agencies. Through the extensive resources of UPMC,
WPIC offers patients a complete range of medical and psychiatric
diagnostic and treatment services. Each year, WPIC serves more than
25,000 patients and their families.
For psychiatric
disorders, as with all medical illnesses, successful treatment begins
with a complete and accurate assessment of the individual. We provide
comprehensive evaluations for people of all ages in a number of
settings, including a 24-hour emergency room. Since discussions
with family members (with the patient’s consent) are a valued
part of the evaluation process, family members are encouraged to
accompany the patient to the assessment.
Based on the
assessment, clinicians recommend the program that will be most helpful
and tailor a treatment plan to meet the specific needs of the individual.
The diagnosis and treatment plan are explained to the patient and
family, and treatment proceeds only with their consent.
Treatment may
include individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, medication,
or a combination of approaches, and is a cooperative effort between
the patient, family members, and professional staff.
Because psychiatric
disorders can involve many factors, patients may receive care from
a team of professionals, often including psychiatrists, nurses,
and social workers. This team provides the patient and the family
with education and communication throughout the treatment process
to enhance the patient’s recovery.
WPIC provides a full continuum of care for every
level of need, including:
